Airway Health: Why Is It Important?

Airway Health: Why Is It Important?

What is Airway Health?

Your airway consists of the nose, mouth, throat (pharynx), voice box (larynx), windpipe (trachea) airway (bronchi), and lungs, which allow air to enter and exit your body with each breath. Maintaining airway health is an essential component in maintaining your sleep requirements, dental and whole-body health. The healthiest way to breathe is through the nose, not the mouth—our mouth is for eating and our nose is for breathing.

Any decrease or stopping of airflow is the result of repetitive partial or complete obstruction of the airway, caused by the narrowing of the respiratory passages. These disruptions place you at greater risk of developing other serious health issues.

What are the Consequences of Poor Airway Health?

There are a myriad of health consequences that poor airway health leads to, such as the increased risk of obesity, ADHD, asthma, Alzheimer’s, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, hormonal disorders, depression, acid reflux, weight gain, and cognitive decline.

Snoring and mouth breathing are common indicators of the sleep disorder obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA, which is caused by a consistent decrease in airflow while asleep. Approximately 26% of people aged between 30 and 70 suffer from sleep apnea and at least 2–3% of children suffer from sleep apnea. Unfortunately, 80% of people with moderate and severe OSA go undiagnosed (American Sleep Apnea Association, 2022).

Improve And Evaluate Your Airway Health

Here are a few next steps to consider:

  • See your dentist to look for oral manifestations of an airway issue
  • Ask a healthcare professional for a sleep study test
  • Ask a healthcare professional for a CT cone beam to assess airway
  • Improve tongue posture with the REMplenish™ airway exercise nozzle, which provides targeted resistance to the muscles in your mouth and throat, helping to exercise your airway and improve airway health
  • Have an evaluation by a myofunctional therapist
